Section A Q1a: Research

Part 1:

You spent last lesson making a plan and writing several paragraphs to answer this question.
You now have have 30 minutes to answer this question WITHOUT looking at any of this previous work.

Describe the ways in which your production work was informed by research into real media texts and how your ability to use such research for production developed over time.

Remember the skills you have learnt from the previous lessons when planning and writing your answer.

Make sure your answer is focused and concise, as well as referring to your AS and A2 coursework.

You may NOT use your notes to answer this question.

Part 2:

Look at the paragraphs you created in the previous lesson.

Highlight any points you may have forgotten to use or mention in your timed essay.

How are you going to make sure you remember these points in future?

Part 3:

Pair up with someone in your class, try to make it someone you don't usually work with.

You have 30 minutes to write 2-3 new paragraphs for the following question:

Describe how you developed your skills in the use of digital technology for media production how your ability to use these technologies developed over time.

You should help each other to think of examples you might want to use, as well as different ways of wording/structuring your sentences.

You can use elements of the paragraphs you have already written, but you should make sure the focus of these paragraphs is on digital technology rather than research. This should allow you to develop model paragraphs to answer this question.

You might want to look at the example answers from previous papers to gain some inspiration, but use each others opinions and knowledge to help each other out.

Part 4:

Think about what you have gained from writing alongside someone different.
Has this helped your writing process at all?
Has it given you a new perspective?
What will you take from this exercise that will help you with your answers in the future?

Section A Q1a: Research

Part 1:

You have 10 minutes to a full plan for this essay question

Describe the ways in which your production work was informed by research into real media texts and how your ability to use such research for production developed over time.

Use this plan to work out what examples/points you will use in each paragraph.

You may want to use the below essay structure as suggested by OCR:
Paragraph 1: Should be an introduction which explains which projects you did. It can be quite short.
Paragraph 2: Should pick up the skill area and perhaps suggest something about your starting point with it- what skills did you have already and how were these illustrated. Use a detailed example.
Paragraph 3: Should talk through your use of that skill in early projects and what you learned and developed through these. Again there should be detailed examples to support all that you say.

Paragraph 4: Should go on to demonstrate how the skill developed in later projects, again backed by detailed examples, and reflecting back on how this represents a move forward for you from your earlier position.
Paragraph 5: Short conclusion

This plan does not need to be incredibly detailed, it does however need to be specific. Re-wording the above structure will not help you plan out the answer for this question.

You should have a specific point you want to talk about in each paragraph, this point should be detailed in your plan. You might also include a brief note of the example you are going to use to back up this point.

Part 2:

You have 40 minutes to write a PEE paragraph for the each of the paragraphs you have planned.

Use your notes to make sure your paragraphs are specific and focused.

You might want to structure your paragraphs using the below structure:

P: Point.
Use this section to state the area you will be focusing on, for example the specific area of post production you will be focusing on in this point. This section can be fairly short, maybe just a sentence or 2.

E: Evidence/Example
Use this section to go into more detail about the specific area of post production. Pick a specific example from 1 of your coursework pieces that demonstrates your skill in this area and look at it in detail.

E: Explanation
Use this section to explain your example and link it back to the question, for example how this example and post production skill contributed to your creative decision making.

Part 3:

Pick your best PEE paragraph to share with the class.

What do you think is good about it?
Could you improve it in any way?

Part 4:

Using the examples you have seen from each other, look back at your PEE paragraphs and make any improvements you can to them.

Section A Q1a: Digital Technology + Creativity

Part 1:

You have 30 minutes to write a plan and answer for this question.

Describe how you developed your skills in the use of digital technology for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to your creative decision making. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show these skills.

You may NOT use your notes to make your plan and answer this question.

Paragraph 5: Short conclusion

Remember it's only half an hour and you need to use examples from BOTH your AS and A2 coursework.

 Part 2:

Pass your essay to another person, NOT your neighbour or friend and NOT someone who has already marked your work this week.

You have 20 minutes to mark their essay according to the mark scheme below.

You should:

  • Give the essay a level
  • Write down 2 things they have done well
  • Write down 2 things they can improve upon
Although there is not example answer for this essay you have seen Level 3 and 4 answers before and you should know what level your work is currently sitting at. You have also marked at least 2 other essays this week. These experiences should help you mark this essay correctly.

Part 3:

Look at the notes you made on these topics over Easter (digital technology and creativity), were there any examples or points that you missed from your notes that you should have included.
Where would you include these examples in your essay?
In a different colour mark where you would put these examples in and how you would improve your essay.
How do you plan to remember to include these points in your essay in the future?

Part 4:
Look at the levels and comments on the essay you have completed today. How does this differ from the level you were given at the beginning of the week?

What improvements have you made from the beginning of the week?
Has your level/mark gone up or down at all?
What can you do to further improve your work?

Section A Q1a: Using Conventions of Real Media Texts

Part 1:

Read the question below.

Explain how far your understanding of the conventions of existing media influenced the way you created your own media products. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how this understanding developed over time.

Using your notes make at least 4 PEE paragraphs answering this question, being specific and to the point with your examples.

It would be good practice to see if you can link these paragraphs together, so you can use them later in an essay.

Part 2:

Read through the Level 4 answer on the blog.

How do your examples and PEE paragraphs compare to this answer?
What can you learn from this answer that will improve your own writing?

Part 3:
In pairs make a plan for this question incorporating the PEE paragraphs you have been working on and any techniques you have learnt from the example essay.

Help each other out by offering different points of view and sharing how you would answer that question using your coursework. A different perspective can sometimes be helpful when you're trying to think of a range of examples.
